4 Programs at Sydney Zoo
Aboriginal Culture Education Programs
Aboriginal Culture programs at Sydney Zoo include a variety of First Nations led programs which are delivered within the immersive Australian precinct. The experienced educators will take students on a cultural journey through programs such as Music and Dance, Traditional Art, People, Places and Colonisation as well as high school programs looking at traditional weaving. Workshops are run in class sizes up to 30 students. Schools can bring more teachers/adults to supervise their students than the 1:30 ratio listed. Sydney Zoo offers teacher entry for free for excursions - up to 1 per 5 students for primary and early childhood and 1 per 10 students for high school.
Features of living things: be a hero for habitat
Calling all wildlife heroes! Explore the amazing features that help living things survive and thrive. Guided by our zoo educators, students will take part in engaging, hands-on activities and discover real-world examples of wildlife conservation throughout the zoo. Together they will learn how animals are suited to their environments - and what we can do to help protect their habitats.
Classification And Adaptations
Students will use technology including thermal cameras to investigate thermoregulation and other adaptations of a variety of Australian species and how these aid in their survival in their natural environment. Learn how to classify different groups of animals as students explore the Australian and Aquarium precincts with their Sydney Zoo teacher.
Traditional Weaving
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have utilised natural materials from their local environment using skill and innovation for many thousands of years. Students will explore how a wide variety of woven designs were used for fishing, gathering, and storing food, and carrying water. This practical workshop will teach students how to weave with natural materials using traditional methods.
