Traditional Weaving
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have utilised natural materials from their local environment using skill and innovation for many thousands of years. Students will explore how a wide variety of woven designs were used for fishing, gathering, and storing food, and carrying water. This practical workshop will teach students how to weave with natural materials using traditional methods.

As you arrive off the bus, a Sydney Zoo teacher or staff member will meet you to marshal the students for a short briefing and check in your student numbers. Please have final student and teacher numbers ready if you can. We have 3 things to remember for a great day to be Safe, Slow and Quiet.
9.45 workshop
1 hour
Located in the Talking Huts within the Australian precinct, the First Nations Education team will meet your class and deliver an immersive workshop. Students will explore how a wide variety of woven designs were used for fishing, gathering, and storing food, and carrying water. This practical workshop will teach students how to weave with natural materials using traditional methods. Students get to take their weaving creations with them to complete at school or home.

Leaving the zoo
0.25 hour
When you are scheduled to be picked up by your bus, we ask you to marshal inside the zoo and a teacher can check if the bus is ready outside. Once they are in place, you can exit the zoo through the doors you entered to get safely on the bus again.
