Stage 6 Zoo Workshops
Taronga Zoo’s Stage 6 workshops are designed to engage senior students in authentic, curriculum-mapped learning experiences. These programs go deeper, offering hands-on opportunities for observation, data collection, and analysis in a setting that supports inquiry, evidence-based reasoning, and applied learning.
From Biology and Investigating Science to Business Studies and Marketing, students will explore real-world applications of course content, backed by the Zoo’s research programs, breeding initiatives, and sustainability goals. Full-day options allow for deeper investigation and fieldwork.
π‘ How it works: When you submit your enquiry on EdTripper, include your chosen workshop in the comments. Your day will include your selected workshop and additional time to explore the zoo. Some programs (e.g. Biological Diversity, Animal Behaviour) are full-day and include structured sessions across multiple hours.
π Workshop Availability:
Workshops run Tuesday to Friday, with sessions available at 10:30am, 11:30am, or 12:30pm (full-day programs begin in the morning and run through to mid-afternoon).
Workshop Options in this Program:
𧬠Biological Diversity (Full Day – Year 11 Biology)
Outcomes: BIO11-5, BIO11-7, BIO11-9, BIO11-10
Explore biodiversity, evolution, and adaptation through live animal encounters. Students investigate natural selection and specialisation using Australian and exotic species as case studies, reinforcing key ideas behind evolutionary biology.
𧫠Heredity and Genetic Change (Half Day – Year 12 Biology)
Outcomes: BIO12-12, BIO12-13
Dive into genetic inheritance and reproduction in animals. Students explore reproductive methods, environmental influences on heredity, and how genetic technologies aid species conservation – all illustrated through Taronga’s breeding programs.
π It’s Zoo Business (Half Day – Stage 6 Business Studies)
Outcomes: H1, H2, H5, H6, H7, H8, H9
Taronga Zoo isn’t just about animals – it’s a working business. Students explore Taronga’s marketing and promotional strategies, its diverse market offerings, and how it meets its business goals while supporting wildlife conservation.
π Observing Animal Behaviour (Full Day – Year 11 Investigating Science)
Outcomes: INS11-1, INS11-2, INS11-3, INS11-7, INS11-8
Students act as behavioural scientists, planning and conducting observational studies using Taronga’s animals. The program focuses on hypothesis testing, data collection and animal welfare, supporting real fieldwork practice for the Investigating Science syllabus.
