Dating with DNA is a full-day, self-guided fieldwork experience for Stage 6 Biology students exploring reproduction, heredity, and conservation genetics.

Using a printed workbook and access to Taronga’s species case study (the Greater Bilby), students take on the role of wildlife geneticists. They analyse DNA sequences, determine breeding compatibility, and understand how reproductive technology and genetics play a vital role in wildlife conservation.

Throughout the day, students move between exhibits, using clues and content from the zoo environment to apply theory to real-world problems — all guided by a structured workbook and supporting resources.

There is no educator-led session; instead, students work collaboratively in small groups under teacher supervision, completing data tasks, ethical discussions, and field-based observations.

📓 Teachers receive a free downloadable resource with the full program structure, curriculum links, and a class set of workbooks.

Questions & Answers

Objectives

This program aligns with the Stage 6 Biology syllabus:

  • BIO12-12: Analyses the application of DNA technologies in reproductive and genetic processes

  • BIO12-13: Explains the effect of reproduction and inheritance on genetic diversity

Students will:

  • Interpret real DNA sequences to assess genetic compatibility

  • Understand the role of genetics in breeding programs and species conservation

  • Evaluate how reproductive success is influenced by genetic and environmental factors

  • Develop fieldwork and analytical skills in a real-world zoo context

  • Reflect on the ethical, ecological and scientific implications of conservation decisions
